Synopsis
When the Battle of Shanghai breaks out, Meng Wanfu, a cook who only wants to survive, is forced into the Nationalist army. Brigade commander Zhang Yunkui is eager to serve his country, but finds himself in a desperate situation due to poor decisions by high-ranking commanders.
On the battlefield, Zhang Yunkui decides to fight to the death and leads his remaining troops to break through and meet reinforcements. Meng Wanfu, entrusted by Zhang, travels to Nanjing to report the news of Zhang’s “death.”
Zhang Yunkui miraculously survives, only to be falsely accused by high-ranking Nationalist officials of being a “running general.” After failing to clear his name, he meets Xie Yufeng, a commander of the New Fourth Army, and regains hope. He returns to his hometown, forms a local militia to fight the Japanese, and joins the Chinese Communist Party.
Meanwhile, Meng Wanfu ends up taking care of Zhang’s family and shares hardships with Zhang’s wife, Ding Yujiao. Guided by Zeng Xuefei, an underground Communist Party member, both of them join the communist revolution.
In the face of national crisis, both soldiers on the front lines and civilians in the rear come to see clearly: only the Chinese Communist Party can save the nation. Victory is won in the war. On another full moon night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the resilient and unyielding Chinese people finally see the clouds part and the bright moon shine through.
