For many women, a trip to the salon is meant to be a rewarding experience, a chance to relax, unwind, and feel good in a peaceful environment.

Unfortunately, that’s not always the reality.

For some, the experience comes with a string of frustrations, including hygiene concerns, late appointments, and uncomfortable interactions with salon staff.

On Girl Let’s Talk, Andy Maqondwana asked the Feel Good tribe to share the salon habits that leave them uneasy and what they wish nail technicians, hairstylists, and beauty professionals would do differently.

“So, girl, can we talk about the salon culture that makes you feel uncomfortable? The things your nail technician, hairstylist, or brow artist does that leave you uneasy.

“You’ve said nothing so far; however, as a salon owner or staff member, you could do better. And here’s the thing, if you’re listening from the salon, siyanoyika, that’s why we’re talking on the radio. Not to you, but take notes,” Andy said.

One caller said she is put off by poor hygiene, particularly unwashed towels.

“The dirty towels, oh my god, these salons do not wash those towels. We love the work they do, but please, ladies, wash the towels.”

Another caller shared that she stopped going to her usual salon due to poor time management and a negative experience with the owner.

“Yho Andy, there’s a salon I used to go to because they’re really good, exceptionally good, especially with iphondo. But you’d make an appointment for 8 o’clock, and they’d start late.

“One day, the owner arrived an hour and a half late. When I called her out, she swore at me, screamed, and shouted. Instead of apologising and taking accountability, she went on a rampage. I decided I’m never going back there.”

Meanwhile, another Feel Good fan raised concerns about loud music in salons.

“Andy, I wish they could stop with the loud music. It feels like you’re in a tavern or a pub, and it’s so loud. My hairstylist understands my hair and knows how to plait it, so I keep going back, but the noise is just too much.”

What are some of the things you wish your salon could do better?
