Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune dedicated Soweto Derby Day to his Orlando Pirates goalkeeper pal, Senzo Meyiwa. Despite being fierce rivals on the pitch, the goalies were firm friends and healthy competitors.
His post comes after Chiefs and Pirates drew 1-1 at the FNB Stadium on Sunday, 26 April.
KHUNE DEDICATES SOWETO DERBY DAY TO SENZO MEYIWA
In an Instagram post, Itumleng Khune reflected on his past Soweto Derby matches against his pal, the late Senzo Meyiwa.
While Khune played for Kaizer Chiefs, Meyiwa guarded the nets for Orlando Pirates.
Khune posted a clip of match highlights between the two teams, which focused on Meyiwa’s powerful performances as a goalkeeper.
He shared: “In honour of my Brother. May your soul continue to rest in eternal peace”.
Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead in 2014 by gunmen inside the home of his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s mother, in Vosloorus. He was just 30 years old.
His murder trial has faced lengthy delays over the past few years, and his loved ones are no closer to finding out who was behind his death.
‘TAKING GOALKEEPING TO A NEW LEVEL’
In an interview with eNCA’s Beyond Game Day, Itumeleng Khune shared that he and Senzo Meyiwa had a strong camaraderie and a shared ambition to level up their skills.
He said: “Because before I started playing, goalkeepers were not recognised. Goalkeepers were not winning the man of the match award. Goalkeepers were not nominated for footballer of the year, players’ player, player of the year.
“But as soon as we took the field, myself and my late friend Senzo Meyiwa [May his soul rest in peace] and I, it was what we told ourselves at the age of 15
“To say, ‘My brother, you’re at Pirates, I’m at Chiefs…We have to take goalkeeping on a whole new level. And we did exactly that. Even when we met in the tunnel before every game or even at the U20, U23, Bafana Bafana camp, we would say, ‘Let’s give the fans a good show’ .”
On his Instagram account, Khune has bragged about having “28 Soweto Derbys under my belt.”
