TAXI FARE INCREASES FOR MAY 2026
Worse still, these prices were agreed upon back in April, ahead of the announcement of official fuel price increases this week. Wholesale diesel spiked to record levels for a second consecutive month, increasing by more than R7 per litre. This is bad news for operators who have no recourse but to finally pass the added expense onto consumers.
As such, South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) explains: “Taxi fare increases for May 2026 follow a period of significant increases in input costs. We appeal to passengers to be understanding when the increases are implemented. These conditions place considerable pressure on taxi operators, affecting the sustainability of the industry,” said SANTACO’s Mmatshikhidi Phala.
GAUTENG AND WESTERN CAPE AFFECTED
Full details of taxi fare increases for May 2026 are listed below, but generally, local trips are increasing by between R2 and R6. And long-distance routes will increase by between R10 to R30. At the same time, Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association in the Western Cape has finalised its price hikes, too, ranging from R5 to R6.
