Three suspected kidnappers are in custody following a high-stakes intelligence operation triggered by the abduction of a businessman during an armed robbery in Norwood.
The victim was seized at a local butchery on Tuesday, 6 May 2026, but was fortunately freed in the early hours of the following morning, allowing police to pivot their focus to apprehending the culprits.
A coordinated task force comprising SAPS specialist units, Gauteng Traffic Police, and private security partners tracked a Toyota Etios linked to the crime to Soweto.
When officers intercepted the vehicle, the three suspects attempted to flee on foot but were swiftly intercepted and detained.
Subsequent raids on a property in Yeoville yielded significant evidence, including the victim’s mobile phone, an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and a cache of cash.
Officers also discovered fraudulent vehicle registration plates, suggesting a sophisticated level of criminal planning.
The investigation has now widened, with detectives probing links between the trio and a separate business robbery in Booysens.
Authorities believe the suspects may be part of a larger organised crime syndicate responsible for a string of kidnappings and armed robberies across the Johannesburg region.
