Orlando Pirates news: Mbokazi, Mofokeng, Makhaula

Today’s Orlando Pirates news wrap has tidbits involving Bafana stars Mofokeng and Mbokazi, as well as the latest on Makhehlene Makhaula’s future.

Mbokazi’s salary has room to grow

According to the MLS Players’ Association, former Orlando Pirates favourite Mbekezeli Mbokazi takes home $655k (about R10.8 million) a year, considerably lower than Minnesota United star Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s pay packet. Talented 20-year-old defender Mbokazi has made 10 appearances in the MSL this term out of a possible 12 matches for the Chicago Fire.

Mofokeng can be the PSL’s MVP this season if Pirates seal the title

Meanwhile, 21-year-old winger-cum playmaker Rele Mofokeng is expected to play a central role for Bafana Bafana at the World Cup in the Americas. Not a day goes by that publications aren’t speculating as to where he might be playing his club football next season. If he shines in the Americas during the 2026 World Cup, there could be some big-name suitors. Mofokeng has 10 goals and eight assists from 25 league appearances this term. Would now be a good time to sell to a wealthy suitor in Europe?

Is Makhaula bowing out?

Midfield veteran Makhehlene Makhaula has hinted that he could hang up his boots if Pirates win the league in 2025-26. The Sea Robbers are on the brink of doing just that after Sundowns lost 3-2 at TS Galaxy on Wednesday. Makhehlene Makhaula has admitted that lifting the Betway Premiership crown could be a perfect swansong. The former AmaZulu man will be 37 in November and has made 16 league appearances this term. Some fans feel as though he’s still got at least another season in him.
