- Corruption-accused businessman Brown Mogotsi has been arrested on charges of defeating the ends of justice.
- His arrest came hours after his testimony before the Madlanga Commission, where issues surrounding alleged false statements and conflicting claims were raised.
- Police say investigations into an alleged assassination attempt involving Mogotsi are ongoing.
Corruption-accused businessman Brown Mogotsi was arrested on Friday evening, 15 May 2026, on charges relating to defeating the ends of justice.
Mogotsi was arrested just hours after his lengthy testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where he repeatedly told the evidence leader and commissioners that he did not want to incriminate himself.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm allegedly used in Mogotsi’s reported assassination attempt has also been linked to other serious and violent crimes, including murder and attempted murder cases.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 18 May 2026.
Earlier this week, the Madlanga Commission heard evidence that Mogotsi admitted to misleading the evidence leader in an alleged attempt to delay the testimony of Suliman Carrim.
This emerged in Mogotsi’s affidavit submitted as part of his application seeking the recusal of evidence leader Advocate Mathew Chaskalson.
Mogotsi’s legal team argued that Chaskalson treated him unfairly during his previous appearance and pressured him to provide information against Carrim.
However, the legal team also acknowledged that Mogotsi had approached Chaskalson claiming to have potentially damaging information about Carrim.
Mogotsi further admitted to falsely claiming that an alleged meeting involving Hangwani Maumela and Suliman Carrim had taken place.
During Carrim’s testimony in March, Chaskalson told the North West businessman that Mogotsi had informed him the meeting had indeed happened.
