MANILA, Philippines – After four postponements, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) is finally holding its first parliamentary elections on Monday, Sept. 14, marking a major step in the region’s transition to a regular, elected government.

More than 2.3 million registered voters are expected to cast ballots for members of the Bangsamoro Parliament, which will replace the interim Bangsamoro Transition Authority as the region’s main legislative body. The elections are a key milestone in the decadeslong peace process and will determine the region’s political leadership as BARMM moves toward a fully functioning parliamentary government.

  • 2.393 million: Number of registered voters, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
  • 5,212: Clustered precincts set up across 1,186 voting centers in the region.
  • 80 seats: The Bangsamoro Parliament will have 40 party representatives, 32 district representatives and eight sectoral representatives.
  • 8 choices: Voters will choose one regional political party, one district representative and six sectoral representatives.
  • Party vote: Voters will select a regional parliamentary political party rather than an individual candidate. Seats will be distributed based on each party’s share of the vote.
  • District vote: Voters will select one candidate to represent their parliamentary district.
  • Sectoral vote: Voters will choose representatives for settler communities, women, youth, traditional leaders and ulama.
  • Four postponements: The elections were initially scheduled for May 2022, later moved to May 2025, then Oct. 13, 2025, before being reset to Sept. 14, 2026.
