Matthew Needham’s Joker Steals the Crown
Unlike Season 1, Season 2 moves into psychological terror territory, with a terrifying turn of events for Gotham becoming more and more obvious the more the episodes go on. Although we don’t see Joker in the limelight at first, the ending multi-episode arc showcases the villain in a light that changes everything. Unlike previous iterations, Joker is a cold, calculating chemist in Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 who does not stand for showmanship. Instead, we see him pulling the strings from the shadows and opting for strategic biochemical terror.
In probably a first for the villain, he doesn’t pull needless, playful pranks and instead deploys a deadly laughing gas in strategic places to slowly gain control of the city. By the end of the runtime, Gotham’s basic institutions have collapsed as his plan for systemic domination comes into fruition easily.
Prime Video’s Batman showcases the Joker’s rise to power with cold, calculative precision that slowly builds over the course of the runtime. It’s terrifying watching him pull the strings from the shadows, and before you know it, he brings the city to its knees. This reimagining of the classic character adds intrigue to the story and works as a fantastic character against Batman.
The Violent Collapse of Gotham’s Mob
One of the topics of discussion this season is the rise of Gotham’s mob and, particularly, Rupert Thorne’s reign of terror. For decades, Gotham’s crime families have run the city and, in season 2, Batman searches for Thorne after the events of Season 1, wherein he manipulated corrupt politicians and police officers. However, in a shocking turn of events, we see Thorne and his associates, including Edward Nygma aka the Riddler, being brutally taken down by Batman.
However, the most shocking turn of events is Thorne’s execution by the Joker. While traditional mob violence was predictable and relied on human vices like greed, bribery and political extortion, the Joker’s decision eliminates those rules and turns everything on its head. The chaotic power vacuum that is created in its stead leaves Gotham’s police, and even Batman, unprepared for what the Joker had planned for the city.
Bruce Wayne Drops the “Pennyworth”
One of the most interesting arcs in this season is Bruce Wayne’s own emotional ups and downs. As the Joker’s relentless assault leaves him questioning himself and making him more and more isolated, the second season sees Batman out of his comfort zone and relying on those around him to take down a vicious enemy.
First and foremost, Batman must work together with Jim Gordon and Renee Montoya to bring down Joker’s biological terror. It’s clear that physical combat isn’t enough to bring down his enemy this time around, and he needs something more tactical to bring down a villain whose brain is his biggest weapon… and, well, his chemicals.
Moreover, Bruce finds himself having to break down the walls that he has created around him when his trusted companion Alfred is inflicted by Joker’s chemical warfare and almost ends up ending both of their lives. For the first time, Bruce calls him Alfred instead of Pennyworth, signifying a shift from self-destructive armour to a more vulnerable character who embraces the emotions within himself. It’s a small step that might make his character flourish more as the city gets ready to face more deadly villains in the future.
Something similar is seen in the last few minutes of episode 10 as well. As the city bounces back from Joker’s plans thanks to Alfred, Batman, Commissioner Gordon, Renee and Barbara sit on the rooftop and look out at the city, promising to protect it and bring it back to its former glory. It’s a quiet moment that everyone agrees with, signifying that the alliance that Batman has created in this season will continue in the future.
