COTABATO CITY – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Maguindanao del Norte has directed aspirants in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro region to take down campaign materials outside the designated common areas.
Lawyer Mohammad Nabil Mutia, Comelec provincial director, issued the order on Saturday, August 1, to regional political parties, parliamentary district candidates and sectoral organizations.
“You are directed to take down immediately all your election campaign materials posted outside of the designated Comelec common poster areas in Maguindanao del Norte, including Cotabato City,” Mutia said.
He pointed out that campaign and propaganda materials have been spotted around the province, even on trees and government structures.
The campaign period for the September 14 parliamentary elections began on July 30 where a total of 2,393,530 registered voters are expected to elect 40 seats for the political party system, 32 single district representatives and eight sectoral representatives.
“Please be reminded that posting of campaign materials are not allowed in public places, trees, street lamps, electric posts and private properties without the consent of the owner,” Mutia said.
On Monday, August 3, the Comelec and its deputies will conduct a synchronized province-wide “Oplan Baklas” (operation removal) to take down campaign materials in areas not designated by the poll body.
Also to be removed are oversized campaign materials not made of cloth, paper, cardboard or any recyclable materials.
Candidates who fail to comply with Comelec rules could face charges under election laws, he said. /gsg
