A Russian motorcyclist died after a crash with a 10-wheel truck on Rama 2 Road in Samut Sakhon province while riding a rental motorcycle believed to have been hired in Phuket.
The fatal motorcycle accident was reported by the Sri Samut Rescue Foundation on Sunday, August 2. The crash occurred on the opposite side of Wipharam Hospital, where rescuers found the Russian rider with critical injuries after his motorcycle reportedly collided with a 10-wheel truck.
Emergency responders transported the Russian man to Samut Sakhon Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His death was reported to Mueang Samut Sakhon Police Station for further investigation.
The motorcycle involved was a white Honda Click bearing Phuket registration plates. Police confirmed it belonged to a motorcycle rental business in the Nai Yang area of Thalang district, Phuket.
The crash site is more than 700 kilometres from Phuket, a journey that typically takes more than 12 hours by motorcycle. The distance prompted discussion on Thai social media, with many users expressing surprise at the length of the trip and raising concerns about the risks of riding on the busy Rama 2 Road.
The Phuket Times Facebook page later shared what it said was the motorcycle rental agreement on August 3. According to the document, the Russian tourist rented the motorcycle on July 22 at about 1pm and was due to return it on August 22. The rental fee was 4,000 baht with a 1,000 baht deposit.
Police believe the rider may have been travelling towards Bangkok, although his intended destination has not been confirmed.
While the rental document circulating online appears to include the rider’s name, police have not officially identified the deceased. Authorities are working to locate his relatives or friends so they can be notified before arrangements are made to return his body to his home country for funeral proceedings.
In a separate incident in March, a Russian woman died after a van crashed on Thepkasattri Road in Thalang district, Phuket. Eleven other Russian nationals were injured while travelling to Phang Nga’s Similan Islands.
