Gamora Explained: A new era for the Guardians of the Galaxy has been announced by Marvel, revealing a new roster and a new leader for the three-member team, giving new shape to the next chapter. The trio consists of Gamora, Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon, with Gamora at the lead as they pursue Maximus.
Marvel positions the movie as a shift towards a more compact team, prioritising more character-driven storytelling over the large ensemble that has been defining the earlier schemes of the group.
Another crossover event in 2025, known as Imperial, reshaped the galaxy’s political order altogether. It established Star-Lord as leader of a newly formed Galactic Union; a role that saw him operate as something closer to an antagonist, appearing to play a role in framing the Skrulls and turning them into galaxy-wide outcasts.
The Team Being Rebuilt From the Wreckage
The news follows years of turbulent times for the Guardians. In 2020, Al Ewing’s run expanded the team into “Avengers of Space”, complete with a larger roster, matching uniforms and a galaxy-wide mandate. Did the structure last? No. 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy broke the team entirely apart and controversially pushed Groot into the villain arc, as it was framed; that was resolved later with characters cleared of wrongdoing.

Where Do Imperial Guardians Fit in
Marvel has been building towards a relatedly distinct concept: Imperial Guardians, a 5-issue miniseries. The project was originally announced in 2025 as an ongoing series and marketed as a new evolution of the Guardians. That series follows a government-affiliated Guardians lineup: Gamora, Captain Marvel, Amadeus Cho, Darkhawk, and Cosmic Ghost Rider assembled under the newly established Galactic Union, with the team formed at the direction of Maximus of the Inhumans.
For now, exactly how this new three-member Guardians lineup connects to Imperial Guardians remains one of Marvel’s biggest unanswered questions. Whether the two teams are heading for a collision course or are simply different corners of the same cosmic story is something the publisher is keeping under wraps. Marvel has yet to announce a series title or release date for the trio, leaving fans with more questions than answers. One thing is certain, though: after years of breakups, betrayals and galaxy-shaking events, the Guardians are entering yet another reinvention—and this one looks very different from anything that came before.
