Camp Rock 3: 16 Years Later, Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers Reunite, Brings Us Back to the Summer We Grew Up

Camp Rock 3: Some announcements make you feel old before you have enough time to process them. Camp Rock 3 is of the same category, because apparently, 16 years have passed since Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.

Sixteen years is an entire adolescence, several questionable life choices (including haircuts), multiple personality changes, and at least once insisting to yourself that ‘you have outgrown Disney Channel’ before quietly watching the Instagram reels at 2 AM.

Disney multiverse had multiple crossovers, and now Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers are coming back in the Camp Rock universe. Joe, Kevin and Nick Jonas are returning as Shane, Jason and Nate Grey, respectively, as the band Connect 3. Demi Lovato surprised the audience with her appearance on the red carpet.

Camp Rock 3: We Really Did Grow Up

When Camp Rock first arrived, back in 2008, it was easy to believe that growing up would be a neat little idea like a carefully arranged album. You go to a camp, find your voice, make friends and discover yourself (TMI: I had none of the four).

There would be a big performance at the end, and everyone would learn an important life lesson and everything miraculously would just work out before the credits roll. Our Camp Rock teens also had things to figure out: Mitchie wanted to be heard, Shane needed to find an inspiration.

Disney always had a knack: it was dramatic enough to feel big, safe enough to feel comforting, and the people who made the fantasy feel real grew up in real life, behind the reel.

Demi Lovato went on to build a career in music, far beyond Mitchie Torres, and the Jonas Brothers went from fictional pop stars to becoming a real-life band. That is perhaps why seeing them return feels different yet surreal.

We would not pretend like 2008 never ended; we would only acknowledge it.

The Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato are Back to Camp

The trailer of Camp Rock 3 opens with nostalgia and cuts to a new set of campers. It then marks the arrival of Connect 3, the band, and they are on a task to find someone open for their sold-out tour, for which they give out tasks.

The characters, once campers themselves, are accomplished musicians: in real and reel life, which in itself is a huge deal for people who grew up watching them.

The trailer itself shows Demi Lovato as an Executive Producer along with the three Jonas Brothers wearing the same cap. Demi Lovato’s appearance on the red carpet also marks significant excitement among fans, with them speculating about Demi Lovato’s cameo.

Camp Rock has a New Generation

16 years have passed, and new campers have arrived. This perhaps is not an attempt to recreate the exact group dynamic of the first two films. It is handing the story to new campers competing for the chance to become Connect 3’s opening act.

That makes the franchise itself less of a museum artefact and more of a relay run, finding voice among the new generation of audience while creating hype with the reunion among the older ones.

The Strange Comfort of Return

Nostalgia is funny and beautiful to experience. We often talk about it as if we want the past back exactly as it was. But do we really want it that way? That is perhaps not what would happen when Camp Rock returns.

We perhaps do not want to be teens again or the old television schedules or the same version of us who thought  Disney Channel Original Movie could solve every problem in a little more than 90 minutes.

We just want the feeling: the one of belongingness, to remember what it was like when these songs were new and when Jonas Brothers and Lovato were not the real-life music stars and when Camp Rock felt like the biggest adventure we could imagine. 

The people who gave us that fantasy return to us as adults because the sequel is perhaps just a note for us to remember: the places we loved when we were younger can wait for us.

Did Camp Rock Ever Grow Up?

The first Camp Rock premiered in 2008, followed by Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam in 2010, both films ranking high on the network’s movie list.

There indeed is something that takes the generation that has watched Camp Rock back in 2008 and 2010 over the moon to see Jonas Brothers come together as Connect 3 and Demi Lovato walk the red carpet.

The real nostalgia is in seeing the time pass: everyone just grew up, but Camp Rock is till open. Perhaps that is the magic of coming back: not getting the childhood back but revisiting it for a little while.

Camp Rock 3 arrives with a new cast, music and campers. It premieres on August 13 on Disney Channel and arrives on Disney+ on August 14.
