MANILA, Philippines – The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte enters its 19th day on Wednesday, with the Senate impeachment court set to hear an explanation from House prosecution counsel Amando Ligutan over public statements reportedly related to the proceedings.
The issue stemmed from a social media post that the defense said appeared to refer to remarks made by one of its lawyers during the trial.
- Presiding officer Francis “Chiz” Escudero is expected to rule on the matter before the defense proceeds with its cross-examination of Office of the Vice President Assistant Chief of Staff Lemuel Ortonio.
- Ortonio, the prosecution’s second hostile witness, testified Tuesday about the processing and use of the OVP’s confidential funds.
- Ortonio previously testified that he paid P150,000 from his own pocket to cover a confidential-operations request involving OVP security officer Col. Raymund Lachica.
- The defense is set to question OVP Assistant Chief of Staff Lemuel Ortonio, who completed his direct examination on Tuesday.
