A mother filed a police complaint against a male dormitory teacher at a school in Phatthalung after her teenage son was allegedly hit across the back as punishment with a PVC pipe, leaving him injured and afraid to return to school.

The 44 year old mother sought help from reporters yesterday, August 31, after she said attempts to raise the matter with the school and several supervising agencies had failed to resolve the situation.

According to the mother, the incident occurred on the night of August 22 at her son’s boarding school. She said one of his classmates called her at home to report that the Mathayom 5 student had been injured after being struck by a dormitory teacher.

The mother immediately travelled to the school but said a teacher on duty initially refused to let her enter because it was late. She then said she would call police to witness the situation, after which her son was brought out to her.

She said her son appeared pale and was having difficulty breathing, prompting her to take him to a hospital for examination and treatment.

The mother alleged that the dormitory teacher had struck her son across the back with a PVC pipe measuring about 1.2 metres long and approximately half an inch in diameter, leaving visible injuries.

She said the punishment followed an allegation that her son had stolen 40 baht belonging to another student in the dormitory. Her son denied taking the money.

The mother questioned why the teacher punished her son before establishing what had happened and said the school should have contacted her to discuss the allegation rather than using physical punishment.

The student also denied stealing the money. He said the teacher struck him despite his denial and further alleged that the teacher threatened to make him drink water from a can that was inside a rubbish bin.

His mother said she contacted senior supervising agencies and the school’s director seeking answers but had received no response by August 31. She said there had also been no discussion or apology from the teacher.

She subsequently filed a complaint with Mueang Phatthalung Police Station seeking action against the teacher over the alleged violence.

The mother said her son has stopped attending school because he is afraid of the teacher and that she wants to transfer him elsewhere. She claimed the school had not permitted the transfer and expressed concern that her son could lose educational opportunities.

According to Amarin TV, reporters approached the school for its response, but staff said the director was away on official duties and the acting deputy director was in a meeting. The school did not respond to the allegations.
