LATEST on amended May 2026 SASSA Older Person Grants

May 2026 SASSA Older Person Grants will proceed on the other side of the Workers’ Day long weekend in South Africa. Unlike Easter, the agency did not see fit to amend payment dates to allow for early payment to the country’s four-million-plus pensioners.

Nevertheless, while that is bad news of sorts, at least May 2026 SASSA Older Person Grants are running on a normal four-week cycle this month. And SASSA says its online service portal is finally back up and running for eLife certification and other processes …

MAY 2026 SASSA OLDER PERSON GRANTS

Unfortunately, the South African Social Security Agency has not budged on the lower-than-expected 3.4% increases introduced by the National Treasury this month (April 2026). Therefore, May 2026 SASSA Older Person Grants will go ahead on Tuesday 5 May 2026, paying out only the following stipends:

  • SASSA Old-Age Grants 60 to 74 years old – R2 400 (R80 up from R2 320)
  • SASSA Old-Age Grants 75 years and older – R2 420 (R80 up from R2 340)

Moreover, not just for Older Person Grant recipients, but all clients like Childcare and Disability must perform mandatory eLife Certification on the SASSA portal. Along with targeted income reviews, SASSA is trying to remove unlawful grant recipients and reduce wastage of taxpayer money on ineligible beneficiaries.

Moreover, following a host of administrative issues that dogged SASSA, it promised parliament that it can save R3 billion over the next two years. Therefore, it is imperative that May 2026 SASSA Older Person Grants visit the online SASSA portal to compete the certificaiton process:

  • Visit the portal HERE.
  • First-time users must set up an account and password with their personal details.
  • Log in and select eLife Certification.
  • Once logged in, follow the prompts to complete the biometric facial scan.
  • This is shared with the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) to confirm your identity.
  • Review your information and click SUBMIT.

Make sure you have stable internet connection and a device with a working camera for the biometric verification phase. This is often the biggest cause of delays.

WHATS NEXT FOR MAY 2026 SASSA OLDER PERSON GRANTS?

While many have complained that the portal is still glitchy, the agency insists it will reduce queue times at all SASSA branches. Basically, all the data submitted to SASSA must be shared with other government departments like Home Affairs, SARS, UIF and the major banks.

Failing to do so could mean your SASSA grant is withheld and even permanently cancelled. Worse still, recipients who have been caught out by the system will have to pay back the money back they stole. The agency allows you to do this in one lump sum, or on layaway over a few months, but you will incur interest costs.
