A power bank explosion nearly set a home on fire in Samut Prakan on May 3 after the cheap device bought online caught fire while the owner’s wife was using her phone nearby.
The incident happened at a house in Bang Sao Thong subdistrict, Bang Sao Thong district. The woman was sitting inside the house with the power bank on a table when it suddenly exploded and caught fire.

She tried to put out the flames by hitting them with a pillow, but the fire did not go out. She then pushed the device out of the house, but the flames damaged a curtain and door before being extinguished.
The homeowner, 45 year old Kittisak, later showed reporters the remains of the damaged power bank.
He said he had bought it online for 400 baht because it was cheap and did not know whether it had Thai Industrial Standards certification or was genuine.

Kittisak said he had fully charged the power bank before placing it on the table and had not left it plugged in. The explosion, he added, could have caused more damage if no one had been home or if the device had been left inside a car.
He urged relevant agencies to inspect the quality and safety of products sold online, saying many buyers do not know whether items meet safety standards until they use them, reported Khaosod.

In similar news, a fire ripped through a home in Buri Ram before firefighters could bring the blaze under control, with the suspected cause later linked to a power bank explosion.
The homeowner said the fire may have started after her daughter left a power bank charging on a bed on the second floor. With the weather on the day hot and humid, a possible electrical short circuit may have led to the fire.
