The South African Police Service has arrested three men in Gauteng and Mpumalanga in connection with an extortion investigation linked to a 2025 case reported in Kwaggafontein.
Police believe one of the suspects is taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni.
Arrests made across two provinces
South African Police Service spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that the Mpumalanga Organised Crime Unit led the operation.
He said police arrested the suspects, aged between 46 and 60, after they allegedly extorted money from a businessman over an extended period.
The victim later reported the matter to Kwaggafontein police station, which led to the formal investigation.
Masondo added that one of those arrested is a well-known businessman. Police are still searching for one suspect.
Extortion allegations under investigation
According to police, the suspects allegedly demanded money from the businessman repeatedly before he reported the matter.
Authorities escalated the case to the Mpumalanga Organised Crime Unit, which carried out the arrests.
Further charges have not been ruled out as investigations continue into possible linked cases.
Police expect the suspects to appear in the Kwaggafontein Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, where they will face a charge of extortion.
Police commend arresting officers
Mpumalanga Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi praised the investigating team, saying the arrests send a strong warning against extortion.
He said business owners and communities must be able to operate without intimidation, adding that specialised police units will continue to pursue such cases.
Mkhwanazi also urged victims of extortion to report cases and said police have dedicated units to ensure offenders face justice.
