- The Gauteng Department of Health has warned the public against using unregulated substances for body enhancement and sexual performance purposes.
- The warning follows two cases in Ekurhuleni where individuals suffered severe complications, including organ failure, after allegedly using unverified injections.
- Health officials say the substances are often obtained outside regulated healthcare facilities and may pose serious health risks.
The Gauteng Department of Health has warned the public against the use of unverified and unregulated injections and substances marketed for body enhancement and sexual performance purposes.
The warning follows two cases under investigation in Ekurhuleni, where individuals were admitted to health facilities with severe complications, including organ failure, after allegedly using unregulated substances.
Gauteng Health spokesperson Steve Mabona said the substances were reportedly administered for body enhancement purposes, including procedures commonly referred to as “BBL” treatments, as well as for sexual performance enhancement.
“Preliminary findings indicate that these substances are being accessed outside regulated healthcare environments and, in some instances, are supplied directly to individuals together with equipment for self-administration.
The department reiterates that such products are not approved for human use and their composition remains unknown, posing significant risks to public health and safety,” said Mabona.
The public has been encouraged to report the sale or distribution of unregistered medicines and related products to the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and relevant law enforcement agencies.
