Police arrest two women over viral firearm video

Police tracked down and arrested two women who appeared in a viral video handling unlicensed firearms recklessly.

Officers traced the pair to Ebony Park in Midrand. They spotted them getting into a white VW Polo and intercepted the vehicle in Kaalfontein.

Police arrested the women at the scene and took them to Tembisa South police station.

Men linked to firearm are already in custody

A day earlier, police arrested two men, aged 21 and 34, in connection with the same video.

Investigators linked the men directly to the firearms shown in the clip.

Police charged them under the Firearms Control Act for illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Officers also found them with a hijacked vehicle.

The two men are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court next week. Police have not yet confirmed when the women will appear in court.

Police warn against the misuse of firearms

SAPS has warned the public against the reckless handling and misuse of firearms following the circulation of a video online.

In the footage, the women handle, cock and point the firearms at each other while recording.

Police said people can face serious consequences if they misuse toy guns, imitation firearms or blank guns in a way that causes fear or creates the impression that the weapon is real.

SAPS urged the public not to treat firearms as toys or use them for entertainment or social media content.

Investigations are ongoing, and more updates will follow.
