Dirty hands at SASSA? 43 officials fired in fraud and corruption blitz

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has dismissed 43 employees over the past year as part of efforts to clamp down on fraud, corruption and misconduct within the social grants system.

The agency revealed to Parliament’s Standing Committee on Appropriations that the officials were fired during the 2025/26 financial year following internal disciplinary processes.

Implicated in various offences

SASSA CEO Themba Matlou said the dismissed employees were implicated in offences ranging from fraud and theft to corruption and serious maladministration.

According to the agency, some of the former officials are also facing criminal investigations, with several matters already before the courts.

The dismissals come as SASSA intensifies efforts to improve accountability and restore public trust in the administration of social grants, which support millions of vulnerable South Africans each month.

More under investigation

The agency further told MPs that 65 disciplinary matters remain under investigation, meaning additional action could follow.

At the same time, SASSA said it is accelerating plans to modernise its services, including expanding online grant applications, introducing self-service kiosks and strengthening cybersecurity systems.

The agency recently also began rolling out a digital queue management system at selected offices to reduce long waiting times and improve service delivery for beneficiaries.
