An Attack Changes Ji-an’s Life Forever
The story starts with Jeong Ji-an returning home after learning that her beloved uncle has seemingly died by suicide. It’s heartbreaking news for her, as she was very close to him and he had raised her. As she starts to process the tragedy and figure out a life for herself all alone, she suddenly finds herself facing armed assassins around her house in the middle of nowhere. With no one to call for help, she finds instructions left by her uncle, who tells her to lock down the house, which was built for something like this, and survive at whatever cost.
The first episode, thus, immediately pushes the audience over the edge with Ji-an, and both are left to fend for themselves in the middle of an impossible situation.
Jin-man Was Never an Ordinary Shop Owner
Slowly, Ji-an begins to piece together that Jin-man was something more than just an ordinary shopkeeper. During her formative years, Jin-man was also emotionally aloof from Ji-an, who had lost her parents at a young age. She knew that he ran an online business of some sort, but after the attack, she uncovers the extent of his business. Moreover, Ji-an was trained with unusual survival skills that no young child would be taught.
In the present, Ji-an thus realises that his online business was just a cover for a weapons-supplying marketplace that supplied everything from weapons and equipment to assassins around the world.
The Real Meaning Behind Murthehelp
When Ji-an finally gains access to Jin-man’s actual website, she uncovers Murthehelp’s existence. Behind an unwitting website is a global marketplace for professional killers to purchase weapons, tactical gear and even intelligence and logistical support. The discovery shatters the image that Ji-an had for her uncle and gives her an idea about what she has to face in the absence of her uncle. Moreover, she soon realises that she now owns the website after Jin-man’s death and the reason why these assassins are after her.
The House Was Designed to Survive an Assault
Although everything about this series was a surprise, the house itself also added to that feeling as every room, nook and cranny had something or the other hidden behind its walls. As Ji-an faces one wave of attack after another, she finds hidden weapons, escape routes, reinforced security systems and secret compartments installed by Jin-man that aid in her survival. The situation also unlocks Ji-an’s own survival instincts, as she remembers the tough lessons that her uncle had taught her when she was just a child.
Ji-an Finds Unexpected Allies
Not everything is hopeless in this shocking situation, as, despite fighting alone for the most part, Ji-an finds unexpected allies who help her to stay alive. Some former associates of Jin-man remain loyal to him and protect Ji-an for different reasons. Although they are on Ji-an’s side, she finds it difficult to trust these people at different intervals because of the situation that she has found herself in.
The Truth About Jin-man’s Past
We learn who Jin-man is through several flashbacks that show his past and how he became Ji-an’s guardian. He was a part of a powerful mercenary organisation called Babylon, which he left behind to take care of Ji-an after he clashed with Bale, a fellow Babylon operative, resulting in her parents’ deaths. However, people from his old world kept an eye on him, looking for an opportunity to swoop in and take away his contacts and business.
Why Everyone Wants Ji-an Dead
The assassins hunting Ji-an don’t have anything to do with revenge; it’s about gaining access to Jin-man’s extensive network thanks to his work through Murthehelp. The valuable information, resources and business operations that Ji-an is sitting on are a lucrative pull for all of these killers who probably thought that Ji-an was an easy target. Unfortunately for them, battling Ji-an turns out to be a more difficult task than they expected.
A Shop for Killers Season 1 Ending Explained
The ending proves to be a difficult turning point for Ji-an, who, after battling hundreds of skilled assassins, including Seong-jo, is left at her wit’s end when she finds even more assassins coming towards her. Realising that they are on the hit list thanks to Babylon, she makes a quick decision to pay the assassins her bounty and let them leave in peace. It’s this sharp wit and business acumen that ultimately saves her and Min-hye, Pasin and Brother.
However, what no one really expected was Jin-man being alive – it’s clear then that he was simply testing his niece and has bigger plans for them both. Of course, the first season ends on a cliffhanger, but it’s clear that there are more strategic decisions down the line and, especially, revenge against Babylon and Bale for massacring their family.
