Daayra Official Trailer Releases: There is something almost jarring about the Daayra trailer; not because it is loud or there are fights, or the usual crime-thriller premise. The trailer seems to understand that the scariest thing about the system itself is the people who genuinely believe that they are doing the right thing.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar, Daayra brings Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran together for the first time, with the two playing senior police officers who find themselves on two sides of the same case.
Kareena Kapoor Khan plays DCP Ajooni Kohli while DCP Raman Kumar is played by Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film, inspired by true events, is set to release in cinemas on September 18, 2026. The trailer feels like the kind of thing you finish watching only to find yourself immediately arguing with yourself.
Two Cops On One Case
At the core of Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra are Ajooni and Raman. They are not presented as the conventional good cop-bad cop pairing: that would have been a rather very easy way out considering it is a Meghna Gulzar film. Both the cops appear to be operating from their own understanding of duty and justice.
The trailer establishes that the two officers are investigating a case that has aroused enormous outrage among the public. It begins with an investigation and slowly develops into something much bigger: a seeming battle over how the truth should be understood, who gets to define justice and accountability, and where the boundaries are drawn by the law.
That is where the title Daayra (transl. boundary) feels particularly interesting: it is about limit, the circle, the defining point.
Ajooni Kohli and Raman Kumar Do Not Appear to Play Safe
DCP Ajooni Kohli immediately feels different from the polished, invincible cop mould with rigidity given to her. There is a sense that she believes the system has established rules for a reason while being willing to question what the rules mean when the circumstances are complicated.
According to the trailer, Ajooni does not appear to be necessarily someone audiences will be able to understand within five minutes.
Prithviraj Sukumara’s DCP Raman Kumar walks into the trailer with a completely different kind of energy. He is seemingly convinced that serving justice is a complicated ordeal and sometimes there are bigger questions attached. His dialogue loosely translates to questioning juvenile protection, asking, “Is it to protect a juvenile who can rape and murder someone?”
The character does not seem to be driven by one simple ideology while navigating an uncomfortable space between what he believes is right and what the system allows him to do, which puts him directly opposite to Ajooni because both seem to disagree on what caring should look like.
The Real Villain Might Be the Narrative
This is perhaps the most interesting part about the trailer. The crime, investigation and the Ajooni Rama conflict are obviously central, but something that hovers over all of it is public perception. Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra talks about how a crime can create polarising reactions throughout society with fractured opinions that challenge people to know the truth that is beyond the answers.
The film feels contemporary because we live in a time where a headline can become a verdict before an investigation is even over; a viral clip can become evidence; a public reaction can become a moral positioning. Everyone has an opinion, and everyone has a side while everyone believes that they know the entire story.
Daayra seems to be asking a valid question: what if we do not know everything?
The Trailer Keeps Blurring the Line Between Right And Wrong
This is where Meghna Gulzar’s presence becomes particularly exciting: from Talvar to Raazi, Meghna Gulzar has repeatedly shown an interest in stories where morality is not neatly divided into compartments.
Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra appears to lean deep into that grey which is practically visible in the trailer: no obvious hero is delivering a monologue or saving people or even a villain waiting to be exposed. The movie depicts people making decisions and the consequences.
So, What is Daayra Really About?
On the surface, it is a crime thriller about two police officers investigating a case, but peel it open, and it seems to be about something messier. The question of how we decide what justice really looks like.
Both Ajooni and Raman have their ideas of truth and justice; there are procedures; the public has outrage; the law has boundaries; and somewhere in between all that would perhaps be the real truth, sitting somewhere difficult to reach.
Daayra seems like a promising film where you might spend the entire runtime wondering whether the answer changes what justice should look like, which is a much more uncomfortable question, but coming from Meghna Gulzar, it feels right.
