A Thai nationalist group went to the Israeli Embassy in Thailand yesterday, August 24, to submit a letter over alleged misconduct by Israeli tourists and residents, but embassy staff refused to accept it.
The Thai Intolerance Team, known in Thai as Thai Mai Thon (TMT), describes itself as a movement bringing together people from different professions under a “Thailand First” principle aimed at protecting national interests and Thai people within a constitutional democracy.
The group went to the embassy to submit the letter to the Israeli ambassador. The letter asked the embassy to help inform Israeli tourists and residents about the need to respect Thai laws, customs, traditions and culture.
Embassy staff reportedly did not accept the letter directly and instead told the group’s representatives to leave the documents outside the embassy building, which they did.
The letter cited complaints from several parts of Thailand accusing some Israeli tourists and residents of threats, harassment and disputes with Thai people and business operators. It also raised business and property issues in Phuket, Surat Thani, particularly Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan, and Pai district in Mae Hong Son.
Thai Mai Thon stressed that it was not seeking to blame or generalise all Israelis. Instead, it called for allegations of wrongdoing to be investigated under Thai law and asked the embassy to encourage Israeli nationals to respect Thailand’s laws and rules.
The group also called for constructive communication between the Israeli Embassy and the Thai public to resolve the concerns and prevent the situation from escalating and affecting Thai-Israeli relations.
