Thailand Jobless Total Reaches 400,000 as Inflation Erodes Pay
Thailand’s unemployment rate rose to 0.95% in the second quarter of 2026, leaving about 400,000 people without work even as total employment increased 5.1% year-on-year to 41.5 million. Agriculture and services added workers during the long holiday period, but applications for unemployment benefits climbed to 290,000 while business closures increased 12.5% to 7,024 in the first half of the year. University graduates recorded the highest unemployment rate among education groups at 1.70%, while long-term unemployment reached 81,000 and the number of underemployed workers grew 8% to 2.2 million. Average monthly wages slipped 0.25% to 15,937 baht, and once inflation of 2.70% was taken into account, real wages fell by 2.88%. A new employee welfare fund taking effect on October 1 will initially require qualifying employers and employees to each contribute 0.25% of wages, with the scheme expected to cover around 5.7 million workers.
Chao Phraya Levels Set to Rise as Seven Provinces Are Told to Prepare
Royal Irrigation Office 12 has warned authorities in seven provinces to closely monitor the Chao Phraya River as rising flows are expected to push water levels higher downstream. The notice covers Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya and Lop Buri. Water flowing into the Chao Phraya Dam was measured at 936 cubic metres per second, while the dam was releasing 450 cubic metres per second with discharge expected to rise to between 500 and 700. Officials predict downstream river levels could increase by around 1 to 1.5 metres in areas stretching from Chai Nat into parts of Ayutthaya. Authorities currently expect the water to remain within the riverbanks but have asked riverside communities to stay alert, with another warning planned if dam releases exceed 700 cubic metres per second.
Chinese Tourist Escapes Moving Car After Alleged Abduction from Bangkok
A Chinese tourist told police she was deceived by someone she believed was a tour guide before being collected from her Bangkok hotel and allegedly abducted by four Thai men. She said the group took her phone, bound her hands with cable ties and injured her mouth while driving her towards Mae Sot near the Myanmar border. When the vehicle approached a police checkpoint in Kamphaeng Phet, she shouted for help, prompting the driver to speed away before she managed to open a door and escape from the moving car. A dispute erupted near a fruit stall on Phra Tamnak Road in Pattaya after vendor Urai said she asked an Indian man to move his motorcycle from a prohibited parking area. According to the vendor, the man refused, shouted vulgarities and continued approaching her in a threatening manner despite being asked to leave. A Russian motorist passing the scene stopped to intervene, and viral footage showed the confrontation becoming physical as he slapped and kicked the Indian man until he fell to the ground. Witnesses eventually separated the pair, while the Indian man later returned to apologise to the vendor and police reportedly warned him against threatening local residents. Bangkok Hotel Drug Raid Leads to Arrest of Chinese Overstayer and Thai Woman
Police arrested a Chinese man and a Thai woman during an August 21 raid on a hotel room in Bangkok’s Din Daeng district after receiving information about suspected drug activity. Officers found more than 40 grams of crystal methamphetamine along with digital scales and small plastic bags that investigators said could be used to divide drugs for sale. Urine tests on the 30-year-old Chinese man, identified as Lin, and the 27-year-old Thai woman, identified as Fah, both returned positive results for methamphetamine. A passport check also found that Lin did not have valid entry documents and had overstayed his permitted period in Thailand. Both suspects were charged with jointly possessing and using a Category 1 narcotic, while Lin faces additional immigration charges related to illegal entry and overstaying.
Free M82 Trial to Extend Elevated Motorway to Ban Phaeo from August 28
The Department of Highways will open a new 16.4-kilometre section of the M82 motorway between Ekachai and Ban Phaeo for a free public trial beginning at 10am on August 28. The elevated road will operate around the clock with access available at Phanthai Norasing, Maha Chai 1, Maha Chai 2 and Ban Phaeo, while two additional Samut Sakhon access points remain under construction. The extension connects with the existing Bang Khun Thian-Ekachai section, creating roughly 25 kilometres of continuous elevated motorway above the heavily travelled Rama II corridor. Cars will be limited to 80 kilometres per hour and trucks and buses to 65, while motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, tricycles and carts will not be permitted. Civil construction on the wider M82 project is around 98% complete, with toll and traffic-control systems expected to begin installation in 2027 and toll collection planned for 2029.
Thailand Turns Famous Film Sets into New Tourism Routes
The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched “Amazing Locations: From Scene to Scenic,” a campaign designed to transform locations featured in international films and television programmes into travel destinations. Ten celebrity and influencer familiarisation routes feature places associated with productions including Alien: Earth at Khao Sam Roi Yot, The White Lotus Season 3 on Koh Samui, The Creator in Phitsanulok, and films including James Bond, The Beach and Jurassic World Rebirth in Krabi. Additional routes take visitors to locations in Nan, Bueng Kan, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Chiang Rai, Chanthaburi and Trat, among other destinations. The initiative is intended to draw higher-value travellers while spreading tourism beyond the traditional Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai circuit. The campaign follows a strong period for foreign filmmaking in Thailand, with 322 international productions generating more than 3.33 billion baht between January and July 2025 and production incentives offering rebates of 15% to 30% without a maximum cap.
