Thailand faces widespread thunderstorms and localised heavy rain today, August 22, with the Thai Meteorological Department warning of flash flood risk in the North, Central and Eastern regions. A monsoon trough stretching across upper Laos and into a depression over Hainan Island, China, combined with a strengthening southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea, is driving the wet conditions.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) urged residents in affected areas to watch for flash floods, runoff from higher ground and overflowing waterways, particularly near foothills and low-lying land.

Sailors in both areas were advised to navigate with caution and avoid thunderstorm zones, while small boats in the upper Andaman Sea were told to stay ashore for now.
Separately, the depression over Hainan Island is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm and make landfall in southern Guangxi province, China, around August 24 to 25. The storm is not expected to track into Thailand or directly affect the country’s weather, though the Thai Meteorological Department advised anyone travelling to the region during that period to check conditions before departure.
