The Thai Meteorological Department has issued its weather forecast for 5 September, warning of isolated heavy rain and rough seas across large parts of the country.
According to the department, a monsoon trough is lying across the North and upper Northeast into a low pressure cell over the Gulf of Tonkin, while a moderate southwest monsoon is affecting the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.
The Thai Meteorological Department said isolated heavy rain is likely in parts of the North and Northeast, and warned residents in affected areas to watch for flash floods, water overflows and landslides, particularly near waterways close to foothills and low lying land.
Moderate winds and waves in the upper Andaman Sea were forecast to reach around two metres, rising above two metres during thunderstorms. The department advised all vessels to proceed with caution and avoid thunderstorm areas.
North
Scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are expected in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Sukhothai, Tak and Phichit, with isolated very heavy rain forecast for Nan, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok and Phetchabun. Minimum temperatures will range from 22 to 27 degrees Celcius (°C), with maximums of 27 to 35°C. Southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres an hour are expected.
Northeast
Fairly widespread rain with isolated heavy falls is forecast for Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram and Surin. Isolated very heavy rain is expected in Loei, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani. Minimum temperatures will be 22 to 26°C, with maximums of 31 to 35°C. Southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres an hour are forecast.
Central
Scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are expected in Lop Buri, Saraburi, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon. Minimum temperatures will range from 23 to 27°C, with maximums of 34 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds of 10 to 20 kilometres an hour are forecast.
East
Scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are expected in Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chanthaburi and Trat. Minimum temperatures will be 23 to 27°C, with maximums of 31 to 35°C. Southwesterly winds of 15 to 35 kilometres an hour are forecast, with wave heights of one to two metres, rising above two metres during thunderstorms.
South East Coast
Scattered thundershowers are forecast mainly for Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Minimum temperatures will range from 23 to 26°C, with maximums of 33 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds of 15 to 35 kilometres an hour are expected, with wave heights of around one metre, rising to one to two metres offshore and above two metres during thunderstorms.
South West Coast
Scattered thundershowers are forecast mainly for Ranong, Phang Nga, Trang and Satun. Minimum temperatures will be 23 to 27°C, with maximums of 31 to 34°C. From Phuket northward, southwesterly winds of 20 to 35 kilometres an hour are expected, with wave heights of around two metres, rising above two metres during thunderstorms. From Krabi southward, southwesterly winds of 15 to 35 kilometres an hour are forecast, with wave heights of one to two metres, rising above two metres during thunderstorms.
Bangkok and Vicinity
Scattered thundershowers and isolated heavy rain are forecast for the capital. Minimum temperatures will range from 26 to 28°C, with maximums of 33 to 36°C. Southwesterly winds of 10 to 25 kilometres an hour are expected.
Sea Conditions
The Thai Meteorological Department warned of moderate winds and waves of around two metres in the upper Andaman Sea, rising above two metres during thunderstorms, and advised ships to proceed with caution and avoid thunderstorm areas throughout the forecast period.
