Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued its 11th warning on the current rainy spell, forecasting heavy to very heavy rain across northern and upper northeastern Thailand through August 21. The rain is driven by a monsoon trough over the region combined with the southwest monsoon strengthening over the Andaman Sea.

The department flagged a risk of flash floods and runoff in foothill areas, near waterways, and in low-lying zones. Residents in the affected regions were told to avoid known flood-prone routes and to plan travel with caution over the next two days.

Sea conditions are also rough. Waves in the upper Andaman Sea and upper Gulf of Thailand are running 2-3 metres, rising above 3 metres during thunderstorms, while the lower Andaman Sea is seeing around 2 metres, higher in stormy conditions. Small boats have been told to stay in port in the upper Andaman and Gulf areas.

The Meteorological Department is urging the public to follow further updates through its website or by calling 0-2399-4012-13 and the 24-hour hotline 1182.
