- Beneficiaries can now complete mandatory annual identity verifications remotely via the SASSA Online Services Portal.
- The system uses biometric facial recognition and Home Affairs data to securely confirm a recipient’s identity and status.
- Failing to complete the certification when prompted may result in immediate grant suspension or payment delays.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is encouraging grant recipients to use its digital e-Life Certification platform following the resolution of recent technical glitches.
This self-service portal allows beneficiaries to verify they are still alive and eligible for payments from the comfort of home, bypassing the need for long queues at local offices.
SASSA recently apologised for system disruptions caused by interface issues with other government departments.
These “glitches” prevented many from accessing the portal after receiving notifications to verify their status. However, the agency has confirmed that these technical faults are now resolved, and the platform is fully operational for those with internet access.
Under the Social Assistance Act, life certification is a legal requirement to ensure that public funds reach only legitimate, living recipients.
By using biometric “Know Your Client” technology, SASSA aims to protect the integrity of the social grant system and prevent fraudulent claims made in the names of deceased individuals.
The online platform offers several advantages, including reduced travel costs and faster processing times.
While all beneficiaries are encouraged to verify their status annually, those specifically contacted by SASSA must comply within the given timeframe to avoid having their grants cancelled.
SASSA remains committed to ensuring the right person receives the right grant at the correct time. Members of the public are encouraged to assist in this mission by reporting any suspected grant fraud anonymously through the agency’s official call centre or email channels.
Beneficiaries can access the self-service platform at: https://services.sassa.gov.za/portal/r/sassa/sassa/home.
