BARMM poll winners may be proclaimed before midnight Tuesday

MANILA, Philippines — The winners of the regional parliamentary political party (RPPP) race and sectoral representatives in the first Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliamentary elections are expected to be proclaimed before midnight on Tuesday, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said on Tuesday. 

The electoral exercise was extended on Tuesday in Maluso, Basilan after after pre-shaded and compromised ballots were discovered in 36 out of 68 precincts in the town on Monday.

“More or less bago mag alas dose mamayang gabi ay mapoproklama na natin ang lahat ng winning regional political parties at lahat ng winning sectoral representatives ng iba’t ibang sector dito sa Bangsamoro parliamentary elections,” Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia told reporters in an interview.

Garcia noted that after the polling places close in Maluso town at 7 p.m., precincts are expected to finish canvassing votes by 8:30 p.m., afterwhich, the municipality may transmit the results to the Provincial Board of Canvassers (PBOC) by 9 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. 

The PBOC is then anticipated to transmit results to the Regional Board of Canvassers by 10 p.m. 

As the Comelec already received 98.54 percent of election returns (ERs), or equivalent to 5,136 ERs, it is now waiting for the 76 precincts to transmit their ERs.

Meanwhile, the Parish Pastoral for Responsible Voting’s data server as of 1:16 showed that Bangsamoro Federalist Party is still leading the political party race with 660,464 votes (35.2 percent), followed by the United Bangsamoro Justice Party with 609,078 votes (32.4 percent), Bangsamoro Grand Coalition with 386,033 votes (20.5 percent), and Raayat Democratic Party with 67,855 votes (3.6 percent). 

These four RPPPs are already secured of their seats in the parliament. The Bangsamoro Autonomy Act (BAA) No. 35, as amended by BAA No. 88, provides that parties receiving at least 2.5 percent of the total valid votes for the party representation race are entitled to be allocated party representation seats. 

The historic elections will fill the 80-seat parliament, where 40 seats are allocated for party representatives, 32 for district representatives, and eight sectoral representatives.

The eight seats will be allocated to women, youth, traditional leaders, ulama or Islamic scholars, and traditional leaders.
