Bangkok immigration offices closes Sept 28–29 as floods persist

Bangkok immigration offices will remain closed today and tomorrow, September 28 and 29, after the government declared two special public holidays in response to widespread flooding.

The closure affects six Immigration Division 1 service locations, including Chaeng Watthana Government Complex and the visa extension centre at IT Square Laksi.

The announcement follows an emergency Cabinet meeting yesterday, September 27, which approved additional holidays for government offices in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan. The measure is intended to reduce travel while floodwater continues to affect roads and residential communities.

Immigration Division 1 confirmed that all its service centres would close for both days, apologising to foreigners and other visitors affected by the disruption.

The closure covers the following locations:

  • Chaeng Watthana Government Complex, Building B, second and third floors.
  • IT Square Laksi, third floor, including Counter K for temporary visa extensions.
  • Thailand Investment and Expat Service Centre (TIESC), One Bangkok, PARADE Zone, sixth floor.
  • Immigration services for legalised workers from four nationalities at IT Square Laksi, second floor; Imperial World Ladprao, fifth floor; and Big C Dao Khanong, second floor.

The announcement does not specify whether visa extension deadlines or overstay penalties will be adjusted. Foreigners whose permission to stay expires during the closure should confirm the applicable arrangements with immigration rather than assume they have been granted an automatic extension.

Government agencies have been instructed to maintain online services where possible, although the announcement does not confirm which immigration procedures will remain available remotely.

The two-day holiday does not automatically apply to private businesses, banks, state enterprises or hospitals.

Bangkok has experienced severe flooding following several days of heavy rainfall, with more than 300 millimetres recorded in some areas since September 24. Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has declared all 50 districts as disaster-affected areas to facilitate emergency assistance.

The city had opened 233 emergency shelters as overflowing canals affected residential areas and transport routes. More than 400 Bangkok Metropolitan Administration schools have also been ordered to close today.

Among the hardest-hit locations are communities near Khlong Saen Saep in Bang Kapi, Khlong Prem Prachakorn in Lak Si and Khlong Prawet in Lat Krabang. Flooding has left some roads impassable and forced residents to evacuate.

By 6am today, Bangkok officials reported improving conditions as overnight rainfall eased and water levels in major canals began falling.

However, drainage operations are continuing, and the Thai Meteorological Department warns that isolated heavy rain remains possible in Bangkok and surrounding provinces.
