Matthew Rhys Emmy Nomination: The Welsh actor has eight Emmy nominations, one win, and two acting nominations this year and a very humorous yet refreshingly honest answer about why he takes the job: cash.

There is a particular kind of actor Matthew Rhys has become, and you know him.

Matthew Rhys has been working straight for decades, has an Emmy sitting somewhere at his home, has headlined one of television’s most acclaimed dramas and played everyone from a Cold War spy to Perry Mason to a possibly murderous millionaire and still has not quite become that guy.

There are actors whose faces are on every billboard, doing magazine covers and who appear on your feed every time you open social media. It starts to feel like you are personally involved in their career trajectory. Matthew Rhys has escaped the particular hamster wheel. 

He has instead built something more interesting: a career in which the work keeps getting louder even when the performer remains silent.

Matthew Rhys Is Having a Moment

At the 2026 Emmys, Rhys picked up two acting nominations: Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me. Along with these, he is also nominated as an executive producer of Widow’s Bay. Matthew Rhys has entered his Emmy moment. 

But the more interesting part is that it does not actually feel like a comeback because a comeback implies that someone disappears, and Matthew Rhys never did. Perhaps that is why the current attention around him feels more like the internet collectively ganging up together and questioning themselves as to why he was not given more attention.

Eight Emmy Nominations Later

The Television Academy nominations make the entire ‘underrated’ conversation complicated. Matthew Rhys has eight nominations and one win. His first three Outstanding Lead Actor nominations came for The Americans in 2016, 2017, and 2018, winning the award in 2018. He was nominated for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series in Girls in 2017 and later nominated for Lead Actor nomination for Perry Mason in 2021.

In 2026, he is back with more for very different roles.

In The Beast in Me, Matthew Rhys plays a wealthy, charismatic man, Nile Jarvis, whose presence becomes increasingly sinister as the series unfolds, which has earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited or Anthology Series or Movie – 2026.

In Widow’s Bay, he plays Mayor Tom Loftis, who is a man attempting to transform a haunted island into a tourist destination. 

Mathew Rhys is sometimes a spy, then a lawyer, then he might have murdered his wife, then he is a mayor attempting to monetise a cursed island. The range the actor portrays is something that can be studied.

The Americans

The problem when an actor gives a great performance is that everything after becomes a footnote. For Matthew Rhys, the performance was Philip Jennings. The Americans ran for six seasons, and Matthew Rhys played a deep-cover KGB spy posing as a normal travel agent and family man in suburban Washington, DC.

It was an enormous role not just because he was a spy but because he was constantly required to be several contradictory people at once: husband, father, lover, murderer, agent. Matthew Rhys played Philip Jennings like a collection of character notes, making contradictions look ordinary.

Mathew Rhys Said the Thing Actors Don’t

This brings us to the quote currently making the rounds. When asked by Variety how he chooses his projects, Mathew Rhys answered with one word: “cash”.

He elaborated that “whatever pays the most wine”, joking that he has three children and a mortgage and further explaining the other reasons for choosing the projects. There is something almost revolutionary about how refreshingly un-Hollywood that answer is.

Actors are usually expected to explain their choices in philosophical terms or language of passion. Sometimes it might be true, but Matthew Rhys went all candid. 

The more interesting part is that he did not dismiss Widow’s Bay and has also spoken positively about the show’s unusual material. So the ‘cash part’ is less of “I do not care about work” and more about an amusingly blunt admission that actors, despite being artists, are also people with mortgages.

Perhaps this is why Matthew Rhys feels refreshingly normal.

There is a strange closeness to a celebrity admitting that money matters, especially when that celebrity is already successful. 

Matthew Rhys has an Emmy and multiple nominations. He works on major streaming productions and has been a leading man on prestige television. He is famous enough that people know him, but not so omnipresent that people feel like they know everything about him. His work does the talking.

Is Matthew Rhys Underrated?

The award voters, critics, and the people who watched The Americans clearly know who he is. Now the Emmys have once again put his name in two major categories. Thus, the term underrated feels too easy. The term under-discussed feels closer. 

Matthew Rhys has somehow managed to become the actor people rediscover every few years despite never actually leaving without needing a reinvention. He has spent nearly three decades building a career that refuses to fit neatly into one box.

Perhaps that is Matthew Rhys’ story.
